There is something particularly wonderful about Thanksgiving in the South. Drives on long country roads. The crunch of leaves beneath your feet. The smell of burning firewood as it mingles with the best meal of the year.
And for many people, part of their annual pilgrimage home involves music — both religious and secular.
That notion was the genesis for The Gathering, a string-band quintet that features Laurelyn Dossett and Rhiannon Giddens of Greensboro; Mike Compton of Nashville, Tenn.; Joe Newberry of Raleigh; and Jason Sypher of Brooklyn, N.Y.; performing Dossett’s original song cycle, “The Gathering: A Winter’s Tale in Six Songs.” The group will perform at Triad Stage in Greensboro this weekend.
