After the 2011 premiere with the NC Symphony and a series of December shows, “The Gathering” returns with a holiday concert as lively and eclectic as any good family gathering, from high-energy hoedowns to heartfelt remembrances of home. The string-band quintet features Laurelyn Dossett, Rhiannon Giddens, Mike Compton, Joe Newberry, and Jason Sypher performing Laurelyn’s original song cycle, “The Gathering: A Winter’s Tale in Six Songs,” as well as a warm mix of Joe Newberry originals and Appalachian traditional songs.
